Harvesting Rights refer to the legal ability granted to the Metis people in Alberta, Canada, to hunt, fish, and engage in traditional practices using specific land areas, recognized by the Canadian Constitution under Section 35. Eligibility requires applicants to self-identify as Metis, have pre-1900 ancestral links to a Metis Harvesting Area, have a contemporary connection to the same area, and possess a Wildlife Identification Number (WIN) for a Domestic Fishing License. The rights are exercised through an application process and granted via a special sticker on their Metis Nation of Alberta (MNA) citizenship card, which is non-transferable and valid for life. This agreement, signed in 2019 by the MNA and the Alberta Government, allows approved MNA citizens to live traditionally on their ancestral lands without needing to buy tags or hunting licenses, except for endangered species.
