About this service
The Court Diversion & Court Support program offered by the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) Hastings Prince Edward (HPE) is a cooperative venture between the Criminal Justice System and the Mental Health System. It provides direct service to individuals who are mentally ill and have been charged with a minor offense. To be eligible, individuals must be diagnosed with a serious mental illness, be 16 years or older, have been charged with a minor offense, voluntarily agree to participate, and be recommended by the Crown Attorney. Services provided include assisting eligible individuals to access mental health support, providing consultation services to all persons/families with special needs appearing before the courts, and facilitating the transfer to more advanced services or a longer-term Mental Health Counselor. An additional Court Diversion Enhancement Program offers transitional community-based services, including assessment, planning, supportive counseling, service coordination, transportation, and support at court appearances. This service is time-limited and includes an affordable housing component.
