About this service
The Court Diversion & Court Support program by CMHA HPE (Canadian Mental Health Association, Hastings Prince Edward) is a cooperative initiative between the mental health system and the criminal justice system. It provides services to individuals with mental illnesses who have been charged with minor offenses. The participants need to be at least 16 years old, have a serious mental illness, be charged with a minor offense, agree to participate voluntarily, and be recommended by the Crown Attorney. Mental Health Counsellors in the program help identify and divert adults with mental illness, provide them with access to mental health resources, and offer consultation services. There's also a Court Diversion Enhancement Program which provides community-based services, assessment, planning, supportive counseling, system advocacy, and transportation for court appearances for up to four months, after which the client may be transferred to a Mental Health Counsellor for case management. The program also includes an affordable housing component.
