SCHOOL PROGRAMS

The Humane Society Hastings Prince Edward (HSHPE) offers a variety of education and outreach programs. These programs aim to foster a special bond between humans and animals and educate communities for better pet ownership. In-school and youth center visits, public information campaigns, and online resources are some of the ways they educate about animal care and the significance of human/pet relationships. HSHPE also runs an annual No Hot Pets Program, addressing the perils of leaving pets in the car during hot weather. There is an active outreach effort for schools, consisting of interactive presentations involving pets, aimed at educating children about animal care. One notable initiative is the Rescue Readers program, targeting the enhancement of literacy and empathy, and deepening knowledge about animal care and pet lives within the community. For adults, HSHPE provides education on topics including pet care, ownership, and animal first aid. There are also community outreach programs like EmPEThy, funded by the Ontario Trillium Foundation, directed at fostering emotional and social skills among different age groups and people with intellectual disabilities via companionship with animals.
