The Rupertsland Institute (RLI) Metis Centre for Excellence in Grande Prairie was established in 2010 as a branch of the Metis Nation of Alberta. It was incorporated as a Section 9 company under the Alberta Companies Act, with a mandate in education, training, and research. Its goal is to enhance the self-sufficiency and well-being of the Metis in Alberta through quality education, training, and research. As the sole shareholder, RLI is accountable to the Metis people of Alberta, who are represented by the MNA Provincial Council, and to their federal and provincial government funding partners. In addition to its base functions, RLI facilitated the creation of the Rupertsland Centre for Metis Research at the University of Alberta in 2011.
