About this service
This program prepares at-risk/homeless youth (15-24) for employment in the culinary field. Youth in the program receive 6-8 weeks of on-site training from a chef instructor, free of charge. A youth worker is also available to provide counselling and to support youth with finding employment.
This program was created to fill a gap in alternative employment programs for at-risk youth in Calgary. It was inspired by a similar initiative by Covenant House (a large shelter in Toronto) that has experienced success with engaging homeless/at-risk youth and leading them to independence, employment and a life off of the streets.
PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS:
- 6-8 week training for employment in the restaurant/food industry (with weekly stipend).
- Hands-on instruction in a commercial kitchen, including menu design.
- Skills in conflict management, professional conduct and teamwork in a supportive learning environment.
