About this service
Birth parents thinking about placing a child for adoption have the following planning options and support services available:
- Voluntary committal adoption (Domestic Adoption)
- Independent adoption
Voluntary Committal Adoption (Domestic Adoption)
- Birth parents make a plan with the Ministry of Social Services and participate in the selection of prospective adoptive parents. This adoption process is facilitated by the Ministry, and there is no cost to the prospective adoptive parents.
Independent Adoption
- Birth parents make a plan for adoption with someone they know, such as a friend or relative. A lawyer working on behalf of the prospective adoptive parents, and a Ministry-approved Independent Practitioner completes the home study. Expenses are paid by the prospective adoptive parents.
