PECH - Crisis Intervention Services

Since 1996, our practice of non-judicialization of mental health clients with the Quebec City police department has tried to prevent people living with mental health issues from entering the correctional and judicial system. These people, who are already stigmatized on the social and economic level, find themselves in the lexicon of exclusion of most stakeholders who associate judicialization with dangerousness. These people who live with multiple problems are among the most socially isolated people in Quebec. The context of the arrest constitutes a privileged moment when the workers of Pech and the police can intervene in order to offer mental health-justice clients an alternative to legalization, either through occasional help in a crisis situation or through rapid intervention linked to the organization of life.
