Spinal Cord Injury Canada was established in 1945 by WWII veterans who sustained spinal cord injuries in the war. Back then, our founders did amazing things like help create the Department of Veterans' Affairs, establish the world's first rehabilitation centre for people with spinal cord injuries, and build a supportive network of people and organizations across the country. Please take some time to check out our history. We are proud to follow their example, and we continue to work across the country with and for people with spinal cord injuries. Over the years, Spinal Cord Injury Canada established divisions across the country, which now includes eight provincial organizations, referred to as Corporate Members. Together, we are a federated network supporting people with spinal cord injuries and other physical disabilities all across Canada. Spinal Cord Injury Canada is focusing on three strategic priorities. Spinal Cord Injury Canada is committed to the successful implementation of the Accessible Canada Act. By working with the government, organizations and individuals, we continue to push towards a more inclusive and accessible society. Spinal Cord Injury Canada is committed to providing excellent Peer Support services so people with an SCI and their families adjust, adapt and thrive by pursuing their dreams and goals for the life they want to live. Spinal Cord Injury Canada is committed to securing resources to actively support the expansion of our Peer Support services and our work on Access and Inclusion. Vision All persons with SCI and their families thrive in an inclusive Canada. Mission Our Mission at Spinal Cord Injury Canada is to assist people living with spinal cord injuries, or a related physical disability, to achieve independence, self-reliance, and full community participation. Purpose Our Purpose at Spinal Cord Injury Canada is to support collaboration among our provincial Corporate Members and to undertake collaborative projects that improve the lives of persons living with spinal cord injury, or a related physical disability, and their families. Structure Our Board of Directors comprises one representative from each provincial Corporate Member and continues to lead the organization's governance. Spinal Cord Injury Canadas operations are led by the Executive Directors' Council, which comprises the chief staff person from each Corporate Member. The Council is led by a Chair elected annually from amongst the Council membership. The Executive Directors' Council hires the Executive Director for Spinal Cord Injury Canada to oversee its operations. The Executive Director also assumes lead responsibility for managing projects and initiatives designated by Corporate Members. Spinal Cord Injury Canadas Executive Director reports to the Chair of the Executive Directors Council. There are presently two part-time staff members, including the Executive Director.
