N'amerind Friendship Centre - Gladue Writer Program

The goal of the NAmerind Gladue Writer Programme is to produce reports that address the systemic factors which often play a part in bringing the specific offender before the courts and to highlight the types of sentencing approaches that might be appropriate to the offender because of his or her Aboriginal heritage. However, the Gladue Report is not a means to reduce or lighten a sentence. An appropriate sentence should reflect, but is not limited to, the gravity of the offence committed, the harm to the victim/community, and the degree of responsibility demonstrated by the offender. Therefore it must be fully understood that an offender may still receive a sentence of incarceration if it is appropriate in the circumstances.
