About this service

Zhaawanong Shelter has been operating since June 1992 and offers 24 hour emergency shelter for First Nations women and their children who are at high risk of further abuse in the family home. Here we provide a safe and supportive healing environment, as well as intervention and crisis counseling for women and their children. This includes traditional healing circles, an understanding of the cycle of violence, and the promotion of health and wellness overall. Staff at Zhaawanong Shelter also provide emergency transportation as well as advocacy for our clients and referrals to services outside of Atlohsa. Zhaawanong means South in the Ojibwe language. This direction signifies warmth, change, nurturance and renewalqualities we promote at the shelter.
