Our Mission The Voices for Women Sudbury Sexual Assault Centre strives to build an equitable, safe and healthy community, envisioning seamless, accessible, inclusive services for women who have experienced sexual violence. Programs & Services Sexual and domestic assault are violent crimes that are rooted in power and control. By providing victims and survivors with unconditional support and by holding the assailant/abuser responsible for the violent behaviour, we empower clients in recognizing their own self-worth. In sexual assault and domestic-violence situations, personal control and self-determination are taken away, so it is critical that clients reclaim their autonomy by making decisions about their own care. Only then can they begin the process of healing. Intake Process To receive services women do not need a referral. Simply call the centre and you will be given a date to come in for a intake. You will be asked to provide basic information about yourself, and then program and a tour of our centre will be provided. We are here to support you in your first step to healing. The Basics of Healing Workshops Once you have completed your intake, you will participate in 3 weekly psycho-educational workshops. These workshops are educational and informative, and are designed to help you understand the basics of your trauma and help you to learn coping strategies. No one has to share their stories or personal information. This is a closed group. Group Counselling (Therapeutic Groups) Therapeutic Groups are for women who have completed the workshops. The groups are trauma related counselling in a group setting 12 weeks. Groups take place weekly and cover a variety of topics such as vulnerability, self-compassion, trust, emotions, and projection. This is a closed group. Individual Counselling The final component of our program is one on one counseling. This counselling is provided by a counsellor specializing in trauma recovery from sexual violence. Women are entitled to 18 sessions of individual counselling. Women are encouraged to participate in all three components (workshop, therapeutic group, and individual counselling) of the program, however, it is not a prerequisite for individual counselling. Drop in Events and Socials Voices for Women often hosts special groups and events to support women in their growth and help them to remain connected with other women who understand and share in fostering a safe space. Safety Planning In cases where the client fears for their safety, staff will ensure to provide the client with safety tips and connect them with other community services as needed. Form/Documentation Completion Voices for Women staff will assist with form and documentation completion. Accompaniment Clients who require support throughout the course of their journey will be able to request accompaniment to court, hospital, police station, doctor appointments, etc., if relating to sexual violence. Public Education and Training The Voices for Women Sexual Assault Centre provides workshops, presentations and training to the community. Training topics included sexual violence, consent, healthy relationships, dominant masculinity (OHL ONSIDE), bystander, supporting disclosure, and access to services and supports. Community Outreach The Voices for Women Sexual Assault Centre is an active member in community events and campaigns that support the end of violence against women such as Take Back the Night, committees, and fundraising. Access to Resource Library Clients may utilize the Voices for Women resource room at any time during regular hours. The resource room is equipped with a computer that has access to the internet, a telephone, and our library in which clients can sign out books.
