Welcome to our world Located in one of the prettiest buildings in the Old Galt section of Cambridge, Ontario, Canada, our goal is to inform, educate and entertain our visitors with the hope that you will come back again and again. The Fire Hall Museum & Education Centre is a not-for-profit organization, run by a community-based board of volunteers. Picture A noble past and bright future Architect Frederick Mellish (1860-1928) would be proud to know that the fire hall he designed and built in 1898 for the City of Galt lives on today as the Fire Hall Museum and Education Centre. The ground floor has seen many changes since the days when horse-drawn hose reels first occupied this space. Its now the museums main gallery featuring vintage fire equipment and displays. The second floor was the firefighters living quarters until the fire hall was closed in 1979. This space is now the fire safety education centre, a library and archives, collections storage and a meeting room. Every child has dreamed of someday becoming a firefighter. For them, we have a fire truck, hose reels and even firefighters to talk with. For adults, the museum has a vast collection of artifacts from around the world, which provide a broad view of the evolution of the fire service from the Industrial Revolution to today. For researchers, the museum offers an archives encompassing thousands of photographs, video tapes, documents and library reference material. The education centre is used by students of all ages to learn about fire, water, electrical safety and more. The education centre is also used by area fire departments to educate new recruits about the history and development of the fire service. Through a partnership with Conestoga College the fire hall has also helped to train a new generation of construction project managers. The Fire Hall Museum & Education Centre is housed in a magnificent fire hall built in 1898. The fire hall is one of a group of important civic landmarks, located in the Galt core of Cambridge, that has been designated under the Ontario Heritage Act. The building was designed by architect Frederick William Mellish for the City of Galt; it was the community's primary fire station for many years. The building adapted and changed over the years - its original arched doors were replaced by a single garage door to make way for bigger fire trucks and it continued to serve the city until closing in 1979. The Fire Hall Museum & Education Centre moved into the building in 2004 and thanks to the City of Cambridge and its council a series of renovations took place in 2013, 2014 and 2018-2019 - including a new roof, renovation of the main floor, reinstatement of the arched vehicle bay doors, structural repairs, and a new meeting room created on the second floor. Through all this work, the building was brought up to current fire and building codes.
