About this organization
St. Matthew's Lake Baptiste is a church belonging to the Bancroft United Communities of Faith located in Bancroft. The first church was built in 1920 on land donated by Neil Bowen and named after the then Minister, Matthew Wilson. The church played a significant role in the life of the community, which started as a small village but gradually expanded, necessitating a relocation of the church in 1942 to a more central position. The construction was predominantly a community effort with most of the work done through free labor. Over the years, the church received numerous donations, including materials for the building and fixtures of the church. The church, despite seeing a decline in regular attendance and its activities being reduced to summer-only, remains an important landmark and source of community pride for the residents of Baptiste.
