York Region Food Network - Gleaning Program

In partnership with local farms, York Region Food Network offers a seasonal gleaning program. Gleaning is a way of gathering vegetables and fruits in the field that would otherwise be plowed under after harvest.

Our gleaning program allows participants to harvest produce for themselves and their family at no cost. This program is targeted to low and moderate-income residents in York Region.

The type of produce gleaned varies year to year, depending on growing conditions, and may include: strawberries, apples, leafy greens, root vegetables and brassicas like broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage.

Gleaning trips happen at the convenience of the farmer, and typically take place on a weekday morning. To minimize impact on the farm, York Region Food Network arranges a private bus to transport gleaners to/from the farm.
