Bridge to Care - FASD Support

First Steps mentors support to pregnant or up to six (6) months post-partum women who have substance use issues and who are poorly connected to community resources. The program supports women to make positive changes in order to reduce the incidence of children born with pre-natal exposure to alcohol. The program works to build self-advocacy skills and positive mutual support networks. First Steps mentors provide clients three (3) years of intensive mentorship support and advocacy. The Program also provides education and training on Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) in order to address barriers for families and community service providers through community contacts and presentations. There are no fees for participation in this program. BTC mentors work with parents who themselves are diagnosed or strongly suspected of being affected by Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) and who are actively parenting children who may or may not be affected by FASD. The program is available to parents and mentors work with families for three (3) years. The program aims to reduce family breakdown by providing intensive support and advocacy, building on the strengths within the home, ensuring that families are in a safe and secure environment and by strengthening parenting and life skills.
