The Elders Caring Shelter Society of Grande Prairie

The Elders Caring Shelter is a non-profit organization that has been offering shelter to homeless individuals over the age of 55 since June 2003. Located in Grande Prairie, the shelter provides accommodation for up to 18 residents at a time and has been at maximum capacity for 15 years. It also provides holistic programs and services, such as life skills training, employment searches, budgeting help, health and wellness support, and a sense of community. Funded primarily by a grant from Family Violence Prevention and Homeless Supports, resident rents, and community donations, the shelter also hosts an annual Youth and Elders Retreat for interaction and mutual learning. This gathering helps enhance the self-worth of the elderly and promotes their transition from homelessness to self-sufficiency. More than a shelter, The Elders Caring Shelter is a cornerstone of the community that aims to empower homeless elders, helping them regain autonomy and an active role within society.
