Welcome to Sunnyside Adventist Care Centre!! We are proud to announce that as of August 9, 2017 Sunnyside is officially an Eden Alternative Registered Home. The Eden Alternative is an international, non-profit organization dedicated to creating quality of life for seniors and their care partners, wherever they may live. In a culture that typically views aging as a period of decline, The Eden Alternative philosophy asserts that no matter how old we are or what challenges we live with, life is about continuing to grow. Building on this new paradigm, it affirms that care is not a one-way street, but rather a collaborative partnership. All caregivers and care receivers are described as care partners, each an active participant in the balance of giving and receiving. Together, care partner teams strive to enhance well-being by eliminating the three plagues of loneliness, helplessness, and boredom. Focused on changing the culture of care since the early 1990s, this approach to person-directed care initially came to life in nursing homes and has since expanded its reach to all care settings, including home care and residential care for people living with different abilities. The Eden Alternative firmly believes that culture change unfolds one relationship at a time, and that deep change can only take root when the entire continuum of care is involved. Through education, consultation, and outreach, Eden currently offers its principles and practices to support the unique needs of various living environments, ranging from nursing homes to the neighborhood street. Sunnyside is blessed to be tucked away in a neighborhood with a great view of the lovely South Saskatchewan River. The river provides the backdrop for the dining room, where our 97 residents eat each day. This year a new multi purpose room was built with great views of our beautiful courtyard. The philosophy of care at Sunnyside is based on the example of Christ, who went about healing, establishing relationships, increasing faith, and doing good. It is our purpose to live by this example. To do this, they focus on offering the highest level of person-directed care. The home is divided into three neighborhoods, which foster deep and continuous friendships that are nurtured and grown between the residents and their care partners. The residents rhythm of daily life is honored, as they naturally awaken to find breakfast ready for them. In addition, there is a kitchenette available for those within the community to use to prepare foods of their choosing. Lots of baking and conversations happen there. And residents enjoy playing games, gardening, sporting events, roasting their favorite item at the fire pit, sing alongs, musical groups, going for walks in the court yard or the neighbourhood, pets, church services, sitting next to the fireplace listening to the piano, family visits, developing relationships with each other and with their care partners and much more. Sunnysides vision is To be a home that supports Christian values and one another to live a meaningful and abundant life. By keeping this vision alive, it is our goal to alleviate loneliness, helplessness and boredom for the residents that live at Sunnyside.
