Saskatoon Trades & Skills Centre Woodworking Adventure: STSC Skills Camps Woodworking Adventure - STSC - Skills Camps - Saskatoon Children from various Catholic and Public Schools around the City of Saskatoon participate in Saskatoon Trades and Skills (STSCs) Skills Camps. These one-day camps, which run throughout the year for children and youth (grades six to nine), teach children how to safely use woodworking tools such as wood burners, saws, hammers, measuring tapes and screw drivers. In the morning, they make everything from bird houses to tool boxes and planters. In the afternoon, they learn wood burning. What participants are saying about the program: I learned how to saw wood and how to use fractions with a measuring tape. I wish I could come back and do it again. It was my first experience creating something out of wood, and it was fun (Ossama). This was not the first time that I have built something but it was my favourite build experience ever! I liked using the drill and the saw the best (Cameron). My favourite part was the wood burning because I got to use a cool tool. It wood be an honour to do it again! Only King George students should go cos were the best! (Tyson). What teachers are saying about the program: These camps are incredible learning opportunities for students. I have had the opportunity to have two different classes participate, and I feel that these immersive learning days should be offered to every grade 7 and 8 class. Most of my students had never used a saw or a drill, and the instructors presented all tools in a straight forward way that emphasized safety and proper technique. Clear examples of practical applications of math concepts connected this learning to our math instruction and the inclusion of wood burning allowed students to individualize their projects and connected the day to our visual arts curriculum. Students may now feel more confident to take related classes in high school, and they can start to see career possibilities in the trades.
