About this service
A Pap smear, also called a Pap test, is a screening procedure that can help prevent cervical cancer from developing. It tests for the presence of precancerous or cancerous cells on the cervix, which is the opening of the uterus. During this procedure, a speculum is carefully placed in the vagina and opened so the practitioner can see the cervix. They will gently scrape some cells off, which are then sent to the provincial lab where they are examined for abnormal growth. It may take up to four weeks for the results to be faxed to us and we will call a patient if there are abnormal results that may require treatment.
