About this organization
The Alain-Grandbois library was inaugurated in June 1992. Its name pays homage to Alain Grandbois, Quebec writer from Saint-Casimir de Portneuf, he is best known as a poet. His work has had a profound impact on Quebec literature and his reputation has spread beyond the borders. Alain-Grandbois is also a painter, even if this aspect of his work is less known. He left around a hundred works, influenced by his many travels and by the women he met. Companion of the Order of Canada, he also received several honorary awards during his life, including the gold medal of the French Academy.
The Flame of Knowledge, a granite sculpture found on the front of the library, symbolizes the knowledge that spreads through libraries. This flame rises above the river, a symbol of life. The waves come up against it without ever succeeding in extinguishing it. On the other side, they settle on the shore, soothed by this contact with knowledge. A work created by Mr. Denis Matte, Quebec sculptor.
