Restorative justice recognizes that crime is a violation of people and relationships rather than a crime against the state. This is why the emphasis is on reconciliation rather than punishment as in the criminal justice system. It focuses on a process of reconciliation between people based on universal values including respect, courage and inclusion. The parties take an active role in an encounter in which the wrongdoers take direct responsibility for the harms they are trying to repair and the injured parties can express how they have been affected.
