About this service
An increasing number of Islanders are being diagnosed with sleep apnea - a condition that causes people to stop breathing when they sleep. This condition can cause a host of other health problems including heart arrythmia, diabetes, stroke, depression and more. Therapy can be very expensive, with CPAP and BiPAP machines ranging in cost from $1,500 to $5,000 - and many Islanders cannot afford them.
The Sleep Apnea Refurbishment Program provides assistance to low-income patients who suffer from sleep apnea but are unable to afford treatment. The program relies on the donations of previously owned CPAP and BiPAP machines, and on partnerships with organizations as such local health centers, Sleep Apnea machine providers, Lung Association Nova Scotia and the Dalhousie University Respiratory Therapy program who work together to collect, refurbish and distribute these life-altering machines to Islanders in need.
