Diabetes is a chronic disease characterized by the body's inability to produce or properly use insulin. There are three types of diabetes. The most common form is Type 2, accounting for about 90% of diabetes cases and is typically seen in adults but is becoming more prevalent in children due to childhood obesity issues. In Type 2, the pancreas doesn't produce enough insulin or the body doesn't properly utilize its insulin supply. The second type, accounting for 10% of cases, is Type 1 diabetes, which is diagnosed mostly in childhood or early adolescence and is characterized by the pancreas's inability to produce insulin; it isn't lifestyle-related. The third type is Gestational Diabetes, which is a temporary condition during pregnancy increasing the risk of mother and child developing diabetes permanently. It is crucial to manage diabetes effectively to avoid serious health-related complications. Diabetes can be successfully managed by keeping blood sugar within the target range and maintaining a balanced diet; education, counseling, foot care, and support systems are integral parts of a diabetes management program.
