About this service
YSW continues to have a Male Child Advocate position. Literature suggests that children exposed to woman abuse can benefit greatly in their healing from being presented with a positive male role model and they may experience improved outcomes as a result. In addition to providing individual counselling and group support at the Shelter, our Male Child Advocate Worker also demonstrates and models positive attributes that enable a male child to be encouraged to express or develop these same characteristics and also enables female children to develop a more positive impression in regards to males that may differ from their own previous experience. Children and mothers explore topics such as feelings, anger, boundaries, types of abuse, cycle of abuse, impact of abuse, conflict resolution and healthy relationships. Through a variety of art activities, games and discussions, children develop an understanding of domestic violence and explore how it has impacted them and their family.
