About this service
The settlement program offers settlement and counselling services to recently arrived newcomer refugees, all seeking status in Canada as part of first steps to citizenship. Interpretation, information, referrals and advocacy are provided to help refugees gain access to English language training and essential services. One-to-one and family counselling help newcomers deal with past traumas from their home countries and isolation in Canada. Toronto Community Hostel provides newly arrived refugee men, women, families and children with emergency shelter and basic needs of food, clothing, health and safety, available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Through the refugee program, interpretation and supports are provided to access relevant services. The program also helps refugees acquire permanent housing by providing advocacy with landlords and escorts to view units. Timely referrals for furniture and household items help refugees offset moving costs.
