Providing care to those affected requires time and energy from family members and health care providers which can become an overwhelming task.
The disease leads to progressive weakness among the heart and breathing muscles, as well as the loss of integrity of the other body muscles. A large number of genes have been identified as factors in the development of different types of the disease.
Muscular dystrophy can progress to the point of requiring ventilators. Breathing muscles can become so weak that their function becomes compromised. For this reason, minimizing respiratory complications is vital to the care of people with muscular dystrophy.
