About this organization
Literacy is a human right, and an important tool for personal and community development. Those who have difficulty with reading and writing face many social and systemic barriers and more likely than others to be poor, unemployed, or underemployed. Parkdale Project Read takes a learner-centered approach to teaching, developing lesson plans according to the specific interests and needs of learners, working from the basis of lived experience and knowledge, and focusing on literacy from a critical perspective and as a tool for community building. At Parkdale Project Read, literacy is about the whole learner not just reading and writing. It is about building confidence, self-esteem, the ability to name and articulate emotions so that learners can assert their rights and needs. We are committed to supporting adults to realize their learning goals in a safe, positive, and supportive learning environment.
