About this organization
Thunder Bay Main Lighthouse is an iconic feature of Thunder Bay's waterfront. First constructed lighthouse that floated on a dock in 1887 was constructed by the Canadian Pacific railway but later demolished. Today's lighthouse retains a familiar structure, seen in many other locations in Canada. When constructed just after the WW II, the light was called the Port Arthur Central Entrance. The port today continues to accommodate ships from around the world. Work is underway to have this aid to navigation repainted as the paint chips are falling into the water. The light, dock, grounds and break water is strictly off limits to all vessels as this is an aid to navigation and not a stopping place. If you'd like to gain access, contact the Thunder Bay Port Authority or Canadian Coast Guard.
