About this service
Serving the Northeast Region of Ontario, the Mental Health and the Law Service of the North Bay Regional Health Centre is designated by the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care to provide court-related forensic psychiatric assessment, treatment and community outreach support to adults with serious mental illness who are in conflict with the law. The courts are supported by the expert advice and opinions of our specialized psychiatrists and inter-professional teams who also work to facilitate the reintegration of patients back into the community in a safe and progressive manner, engaging family members, significant others and community partners. Core Services Specialized inpatient assessment, rehabilitation and treatment services are provided in secure[1] and general[2] settings. A number of transitional services are also provided including case management, transitional housing and, outreach support and follow-up. Transitional services are designed and organized around the goal of patient self-sufficiency and community placement. Services include: Inpatient court-ordered assessments for Fitness to Stand Trial[3] and Criminal Responsibility[4] are completed in our 14-bed co-ed secure unit, Deer Lodge Outpatient or video court-ordered assessments for Fitness to Stand Trial Expert testimony for the courts and care planning with families and partners via video Specialized risk assessments to assist with treatment planning and risk evaluation Risk management to support a gradual, safe and sustainable return to community living Treatment and rehabilitation in Heron Lodge, a secure 14-bed co-ed unit and in Owl Lodge, a general 16-bed co-ed unit Transitional community rehabilitation in Osprey Lodge, a general 8-bed co-ed unit Transitional case management Community rehabilitation at Maplewood House, a community-based 4 bedroom supervised residence Community outreach and follow-up A secure, 8 bed forensic inpatient unit for adult women in Hummingbird Lodge
