About this service
The Bail Verification and Supervision Program serves two principles upon which our democratic justice system is based:
- the presumption of innocence before conviction;
- the fair equitable treatment of all people regardless of social and economic background.
The Bail Program puts these principles into practice on behalf of people accused of criminal offences.
The Bail program's three major functions within the Criminal Justice System are:
- to identify the availability of a surety
- in the absence of an acceptable surety, to provide verified, neutral and factual information about an accused person at judicial interim release proceedings, to assist the court in selecting suitable candidates for bail release and/or bail supervision
- to provide supervisory, counselling and referral services for people who are released from custody by the courts, where the condition of release directs that such people be supervised
