Why a Pet Shelter on Site?
- Women do not like to leave their pets in a shelter off site as they often feel as it is like putting their kids in foster care while they take care of their safety.
- To remove the barriers for women to access our service. Often they will not leave their pets with the abuser for fear of reprisal to the pet.
- Our shelter is located in a remote small city in Northern Ontario (Elliot Lake) with few options for pets. The one option we have is cost prohibitive for women ($25/day discounted price for women in the shelter)
- The therapy value for women to have their pets on site.
