About this service
Acknowledging the Sibling Experience (ASE - pronounced ACE) is a well-being curriculum for siblings of neurodiverse individuals-that is divided into two subgroups (grades 5-8 and grades 9-12). The ASE curriculum incorporates psychoeducational and psychotherapeutic tools that are strategically implemented across the 7-week program. The accompanying lesson plans and activities are explored as a group, while socializing over food and drinks. To support the generalization of material covered in sessions, corresponding homework assignments are also included. The curriculum is spread across one evening a week, for two hours. During this time, members will learn techniques that will support their sibling relationship, while also participating in activities to foster their individual growth. Following the completion of the group, voluntary mentorship opportunities will be presented, to encourage the on-going support between members. About ASE ASE integrates Applied Behaviour Analysis practices (ABA), Acceptance and Commitment Training (ACT), and Mindfulness into a support system that nurtures neurodiverse and neurotypical sibling relationships and fosters the neurotypical experience. The core foundation of ASE is to promote a collective community of siblings to neurodiverse individuals, that will continue to support each other through their shared unique sibling experience. ASE was developed by Holly Kane, under the direction and supervision of Kathie Shaw and Christina Cabral. ASE grew out of a need for siblings of neurodiverse individuals to be acknowledged and supported- a need deeply close to Hollys heart, as she is a sibling to an individual diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Through the combination of her personal experience, community input, empirically supported literature and evidence-based practices, ASE was born.
