Office of the Public Guardian - Yellowknife

The Office of the Public Guardian helps people become legal guardians of individuals

18 years of age and older, who are unable to make decisions about their personal or

health care. People who need help with their decisions may have a long-term mental

condition or brain damage. Usually a family member will become a legal guardian.

To become a legal guardian people should call the Office of the Public Guardian,

who will then arrange to have a capacity assessment completed on the proposed

represented person to determine the need for a guardian. That capacity assessment

then goes to the courts to decide what kind of decisions the legal guardian may

make. The kinds of decisions are usually about living arrangements, employment,

social and recreational activities, education, health care and day-to-day living

matters. The public/private guardian does not make decisions about money. The

public/private trustee makes those decisions.
