About this service
Autism Pictou County in partnership with Pictou County YMCA run a hugely successful swimming program. We provide one to one swim lessons for a half hour each week for persons with autism spectrum disorder and related disorders. Our goal is to eliminate the possibility of accidental drowning by persons on the autism spectrum. Water represents a natural draw and a real danger to our members. Our program is focused on teaching water safety and survival first with swimming skills evolving naturally as they progress. We pay the YMCA to hire and train instructors who cater to participants' special needs and abilities and with one to one instruction vs. the usual group lesson environment, our members are thriving. These instructors are always adjusting and adapting their methods based upon feedback. They hire the best to achieve optimum results.
