APSEA - School-Age Students who are Blind or Visually Impaired

The public education system is a critical environment in which added support is needed in order for children who are blind or visually impaired to be equal participants. While in school, children and youth obtain valuable information and skills anticipated to transfer into adult life. Students who are blind or visually impaired may receive either consultative or direct service from an educator (itinerant teacher) who has expertise in working with these students.

For all students, the APSEA itinerant teacher works in collaboration with the family and other members of the school team regarding strategies and accommodations to facilitate student access to the learning environment. Students receiving direct service also work with an itinerant teacher in the classroom, school and community on outcomes from the Expanded Core Curriculum (.pdf), as outlined in the APSEA Service Plan.
