SCCSS - Prevention, Education, Advocacy, Counselling and Empowerment (PEACE)

The Prevention, Education, Advocacy, Counselling and Empowerment (PEACE) program is a program for children and youth (ages 3-18) who have witnessed and/or experienced abuse, threats, or violence in the home. Understanding the impact of power imbalances in our society is a central approach to working with the families that access this service. This includes education about the direct impact on those who live in an environment where they witness threats, abuse or violence against women and children. The objectives are: Stopping the inter-generational cycle of abuse by teaching non-violent ways to resolve conflict Teaching safety skills and strategies. Promoting the process of healing. Supporting children to understand they are not at fault for the abusive actions of others Supporting children and youth to label and express feelings they have experienced as a result of abuse witnessed and/or experienced. Assisting children to understand healthy ways of dealing with anger and expressing anger. Facilitating the understanding of abuse and myths about violence against women Parents, teachers and other community services are encouraged to call directly for more information on any of these services. This province wide program was developed through BC Society of Transition Houses over 20 years ago. The Ministry of Justice currently funds a total of approximately 17 hours of counselling weekly.
