About this service
We all feel sad at times. We all suffer the blues. When these feelings increase in intensity, persist for more than a few weeks, and interfere with life, it may be a sign that normal times of being low have turned into depression. 1 In 10 adults will suffer from clinical depression at some point in their lives. Approximately 2% of pre-school and school age children suffer from depression and suicide is the third leading cause of death in youth aged 10-24. Those experiencing depression grapple with feelings of severe despair over an extended period of time. Almost every aspect of their life can be affected, including their emotions, physical health, relationships and work. For people with depression, it does not feel like there is a light at the end of the tunnel life is simply a long, dark, tunnel. No amount of cheering up can make the depression go away; no amount of exercise, vitamins or vacation can make it magically disappear. Depression drains your energy, hope, and drive, making it difficult to do what you need to feel better. Counselling can help people to understand their own expectations of themselves which may be unrealistic or difficult to maintain and to find alternative ways of dealing with life's challenges. Counselling helps the depressed person understand the underlying causes for their depression, identifies patterns of behaviour which may add to depression and assists in developing tools to treat, prevent and manage depression. Our clinicians use a variety of tools to assist you out of your depression so that life again has purpose and meaning.
