About this organization

Nanaimo Hospice is a place, a community and a philosophy. Dying, caregiving and grieving are three of lifes greatest challenges. Nanaimo Hospice believes that everyone struggling with these challenges regardless of age, means or culture deserves support. With compassion and dignity, our volunteers and professional staff offer free programs, resources, and education to our community where and when needed.

What they offer

What we do Palliative Care Support Nanaimo Community Hospice is part of an interdisciplinary hospice palliative care team of professionals and trained volunteers. Our team of staff and volunteers support the doctors, nurses, social workers, chaplain, home support services, dieticians, physiotherapies, etc. at the Palliative Care Unit in NRGH and within the community. Adult Grief Hospice can help. Our grief support programs include: professional counselling bereavement group support complimentary therapies such as Energy Work and Aromatherapy Child and Youth Grief Counselling Children and youth express their grief at the death of a person they love differently than adults express their grief. Children often require play, art, music and movement therapies to assist them in finding the language to express their grief. With youth, there is sometimes a change in behaviours. They may act in contradictory and inconsistent ways. They may benefit from expressing feelings with outlets for expression. Sometimes it is necessary to monitor for high risk behaviours. Most importantly, someone who listens deeply serves the adolescent most highly. Nanaimo Community Hospice through its trained counsellors provides the support children and youth require expressing their grief at the death of a person they love. Traumatic Loss A structured eight-week support program for adults who have experienced the loss of a loved one by suicide, violence or a drug related death. The group is open to adults who have experienced the traumatic death of a loved one and are registered Hospice clients.
