About this service
Until recently, the most common approach to homelessness was a treatment first model. It required people to commit to treatments of the severity of their situations or readiness for treatment, in order to access long-term housing, like public housing. While this regimented approach is an effective model for some people, it is ineffective for others.
The Housing First model is a client-centred and recovery-orientated approach that recognizes each person has a different path to recovery. It prioritizes shelter, the most basic human need, before treatment of underlying issues. Evidence-based studies have consistently shown that removing someone from the street and providing wrap-around support, increases recovery and chance of progressing to obtaining work and living independently.
