First Step Daycare Centre

First Step Daycares environment is one that is warm, providing loving care and inviting a learning atmosphere that allows children to develop at their own pace. We believe that children need to have a positive self-image. We foster that image, along with their development of growth in the area of intellectual, social, physical and emotional skills, through a variety of group activities, individual play and quiet periods. We give each child as much personal attention as possible while at the same time promoting a feeling of group belonging. We strive to develop: Self esteem and problem solving Awareness and respect for others Manipulation and coordination of large and small motor skills Concentration, self help skills Curiosity and discovery Responsibility for equipment and belongings.

Our Program First Step Daycare Centres program is based on a combination of different curriculum approaches such as Reggio Emilias model, learning through play, and basic montessori. Reggio Emilias model is a postmodern approach to early childhood care and education/ the social constructivists approach to education is based on the emphasis of collaboration among children, teachers, families and the community. First Steps emergent curriculum is designed to promote intelligence and offer children every opportunity to excel and grow to their potential through their natural interests and exploration. A sense of community will be enhanced with the idea that we appreciate and enjoy the simple things in life. This is modeled by participating, recycling, developing a garden, and allowing children to develop learning materials, based on their interests. Program routines are repeated daily, however, within these routines there is flexibility for a child to develop at his/her own pace, socially, emotionally, intellectually, and physically. There is no separation between work and play; all areas of learning should be fun. Play is a natural device for learning. Children learn to solve problems, express feelings and ideas, while increasing their knowledge and skills through play, at the same time. As children learn through play, our program offers indoor and outdoor activities, as well as group projects, science, social, math activities, and promotes language and literature skills. We do so through circle times, which contain books, stories, all kinds of props and puppets etc. First Step Daycare Centre provides a variety of art activities, games, puzzles, water and sand play, housekeeping, drama, blocks, construction zone, clay and play dough molding. First Step Daycare believes that parents are the most significant adults in a childs life. Parents are partners in the education and care of their children. First Step offers an environment where parents can participate and take an active role in the childs growth and development.
