About this service
The In-School Settlement Program, started in 2015 by the Grande Prairie Centre for Newcomers, provides support to immigrant students and their families to help increase the students' chances of success in the Alberta education system. The program works in collaboration with school authorities, providing services such as helping families adjust to life in Canada, acting as a liaison between schools, students, and parents, providing orientation workshops related to the education system, assisting with course selection, providing cultural guidance, facilitating access to resources, and offering interpretation and translation services. The program requires support from participating schools, such as referrals and providing opportunities for the settlement practitioner to meet with students and their families within school hours. The program also involves distributing welcome packages to immigrant students and families and offers tutoring services for newcomer students.
