About this service
Companioning Through Grief is a program offered by the Grande Prairie Palliative Care Society, a registered Canadian charity. The program provides grief and bereavement companionship to individuals coping with the loss of a loved one. The philosophy of this method focuses on being present with the grieving person and creating a sacred space for them to express and process their grief. Companions are specially trained in the companioning model of care, designed by Dr. Alan Wolfelt, which emphasizes compassionate, mourner-led, soul and spirit-based care. The program is supported by volunteer help from people like Marianne, a retired social worker, and Marc, a psychology student, who offer their time and energy to assist grieving families. The service identifies various types of grief, including normal, anticipatory, disenfranchised, complicated, and cumulative grief.
