GPPB - Communicable Disease Control

Responsible for preventing and controlling certain communicable diseases, which are classified as notifiable diseases, the program operates under the authority of the Medical Officer of Health. Its main objectives are to prevent and control communicable diseases (CD) that are notifiable, as outlined in the Communicable Disease Regulations of the Public Health Act of Alberta. Strategies employed to achieve this include: preventing infection through education and prophylaxis (including immunization), limiting the spread of infections through timely investigation and follow-up of notifiable CD incidents, implementing protective measures, providing epidemiologic data for reporting and public health response measures, and continuously monitoring and surveilling CDs in the community to detect and respond to them before people become ill or there is a disease outbreak.
